Travis McMichael and Gregory McMichael were sentenced Monday to life in prison. William “Roddie” Bryan was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Travis McMichael, the man who shot and killed Ahmaud Arbery, was sentenced to life plus 10 years in prison on federal hate crime charges. His father, Gregory McMichael was also sentenced to life in prison plus seven years and William “Roddie” Bryan was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Defense lawyers argue that the killing of Arbery, a Black man, did not happen on a public street, and that the elder McMichael was not proven to be as racist as his son.

Ahmaud Arbery’s killers are now facing a federal trial on hate crime charges. Prosecutors will seek to prove Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan chased down Arbery, a Black man, and attacked him because of his race, says attorney and professor Molly Parmer.

In a statement Sunday night, Arbery’s parents said they are “vehemently against this deal” because they believe it would allow the men to serve time in a “preferred” federal prison.
