Wale Aliyu is an award-winning journalist who joined NBC 4 New York in July, 2016. He comes to the Big Apple following six years in the Buckeye State, reporting for WKYC in Cleveland and ABC 22/FOX 45 in Dayton.
During his time in Cleveland, Wale covered several major stories including the tragic, police-involved shooting of 12 year old Tamir Rice, which generated national headlines. He also provided coverage of the 2016 Republican National Convention and the 2016 NBA Finals, where the Cleveland Cavaliers ended the city’s storied, 52-year championship drought in memorable fashion. He was also dispatched to Buffalo in 2014, following a record-producing storm which dumped eight feet of snow in Western New York.
In 2015, Wale’s work was recognized by the Press Club of Cleveland, which awarded him the Ohio Excellence in Journalism award for Online Storytelling, as well as the Ohio Excellence in Journalism award for Online General News Story.
Wale grew up in Columbia, Missouri and graduated Cum Laude with a Convergence/Broadcast Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. He also began his professional career in the Show Me State, where he anchored for Newsy.com and reported for ABC 17/FOX 38 and KOMU-TV8.
Wale has worked several different jobs in the various newsrooms since the age of 15. In addition to broadcast, he also has experience reporting for newspaper, radio and online. He is comfortable telling stories on any topic, but notes that his favorites are those which generate an impact on people's lives.
"One of the first television stories I ever told was on human trafficking back in 2007 while I was at KOMU-TV8," he said. "This was before anyone was really talking about it. We found a human trafficking victim who was arrested for prostitution. Our story helped get her out of jail and spread awareness on a worldwide issue that had come to our little town of 100,000 people."
When he's not working, Wale enjoys playing basketball, writing and performing poetry, and loves to dance. He is also an avid traveler who has been to 36 of the 50 states and several countries on four different continents. A native of Nigeria, Wale loves living in New York where he has several siblings and extended family.
