Grandma Arrested in 4-Year-Old Boy's Death

Police arrested a grandmother Sunday in connection with the death of a 4-year-old Bronx boy who died of blunt impact to his head.

Police were called to a South Bronx apartment on Saturday where they found 4-year-old Kevion Shand unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office, said the cause of death was blunt impact to his head with brain hemorrhaging. The death was ruled a homicide.

Police later arrested the boy's grandmother, 45-year-old Angela Barksdale, on a charge of assault.

Police also were investigating the death of another boy found dead in his Bronx bed on Saturday.

There were no signs of trauma to the body of 9-year-old Derrick Peralta. Police were called to his apartment Saturday morning after his father discovered the boy was unresponsive.

The child was brought to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was declared dead. The results of his autopsy were pending.
