Sibila Vargas


Award-winning journalist Sibila Vargas is thrilled to be back home in New York. She is the co-anchor for NBC 4 New York’s 5 P.M.; 6 P.M. and 11 P.M. weekday newscasts. Vargas joined the NBC 4 news team in October 2013 as co-anchor of the 6 P.M. and 11P.M. newscast with Chuck Scarborough.

Before making her way back to the East coast, Vargas anchored the weekday 4:30 – 7 A.M. and 11 A.M. newscasts at KCBS in Los Angeles where she covered breaking news stories that included Japan’s devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami and the manhunt for rogue ex-cop, Christopher Dorner. During her tenure the newscasts posted record-breaking ratings and Vargas received a Golden Mike award for her work.

Vargas co-anchored the weekday morning newscast at KRIV in Houston Texas and was part of the stations wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Ike. She was recognized by the Texas Associated Press for her work behind the desk and as a member of the morning news team.

Many of her fans remember Vargas as a national correspondent for CNN where she covered entertainment and pop culture, providing regular reports for “Anderson Cooper 360" and "The Situation Room." She was a staple during the Oscars, hosting the network’s “Road to Gold” where she interviewed countless celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and George Clooney. In 2005 she was part of CNN’s team coverage of hurricane Katrina which garnered the network a prestigious Peabody and DuPont award.

Vargas was a co-host candidate for ABC's "The View;" host of TV Guide Channel’s “Hollywood Insider; Paramount TV’s “Real TV” and a reporter for KTLA in Los Angeles. She began her career in broadcasting as a news writer and producer for WPIX in New York.

In July 2012, at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., Vargas, in recognition of her influence and contributions to advance the educational, social and cultural interest of Dominican-Americans, was one of twenty Dominican-Americans to become a member of the Dominican American National Roundtable's “Dominican List.”

Vargas has strong ties to the Latino community and has been recognized by the Latin Business Association and the Latino Lawyers Association. She is the recipient of the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA’s) “2014 Excellence in Media Award” and has been honored by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). Vargas was featured in the February 2014 edition of LatinTrends Magazine’s celebration of Dominican Heritage Month.

The New York native graduated cum laude from Long Island University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Journalism and Minor in Psychology and is fluent in Spanish,

A wife and a mother of two young boys, Vargas is passionate about children’s issues and has served on the Board for Children-At-Risk, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children.
