Checkey Beckford

Reporter

Checkey Beckford joined NBC 4 New York as a general assignment reporter in October 2012 from KOVR in Sacramento, California. She got her feet wet -- literally -- spending her first day at work covering Superstorm Sandy on Long Beach, Long Island.

Sandy wasn’t Beckford’s first experience with hurricanes; she began her career at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she saw her fair share of hurricanes in her role as a morning producer.

Beckford apparently has a thing for wild weather because her next position had her covering snowstorms at WICD in Champaign, Illinois.

She’ll surely be covering plenty of weather now that she’s returned to New York. Beckford grew up in Westchester County after emigrating from Jamaica when she was five.

She attended Mount Vernon High School before heading down to south Florida, where she got a communications degree from Florida Atlantic University.

Beckford and her dog Sammy are happy to be back home on the East coast.

When she’s not out chasing breaking news, Beckford enjoys mentoring teenagers who aspire to go to college.
