Vandals Defecate on Church Pulpit, Break Windows

Several churches vandalized in area

Vandals broke into a North Carolina church, smashing stained glass windows, defecating on the pulpit and spray-painting "House of the Devil" on a wall, police said.

The Cedar Hill AME Zion Church, in Ansonville, was the worst hit in a string of churches attacked by vandals, according to WCNC. Church elders and volunteer firefighters worked to try to clean up the mess, which also included painted swastikas and the message "God is a Lie."

“They tore up our building but they didn’t take our spirit,” said the Rev. Renee Bethea.

A child's tombstone was hurled through one window. In neighboring Stanly County, six churches were vandalized. Police said those churches were not broken into, but were vandalized from outside.
