Royal Toast Sells For Hundreds

Unnamed individual pays $361 for Prince Charles' toast

A piece of toast purportedly left on the table by Prince Charles the morning after his wedding to Diana, Princess of Wales, sold for (£230) $361 at auction in England on July 19.

The mother of a former maid, Rosemarie Smith, kept the piece of bread in a cup on a shelf in her home for the past 31 years, according to Reuters.

“I was with [my daughter] in the corridor and saw that Prince Charles had left some toast on the tray," Smith said. "I had been thinking about a keepsake from the wedding and saw the toast and thought to myself: ’Why not’?”

Smith decided to sell the toast in wake of a “surge” in national pride from the Royal Wedding last year and Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebration earlier this summer.

Hansons, a British auction house, fetched the highest price ever for a piece of food sold at auction in Great Britain, according to Reuters.

It was sold to an unnamed U.K. buyer in a telephone bidding war with another person, the BBC reported.

There is no way to prove this piece of toast was ever in the presence of Prince Charles, Hansons said. That didn’t seem to matter to person who bought it.
