A North Carolina man robbed a bank, but it wasn't money he was after.
James Verone, 59, walked into the RBC Bank in Gastonia and handed the teller a note. "This is a bank robbery. Please give me one dollar," the note read.
Then Verone made the opposite of a getaway.
"I started to walk away from the teller, then I went back and said, 'I'll be sitting right over there in the chair waiting for the police," Verone told WCNC.
Verone said he does not have medical insurance, but has an assortment of health problems. He said he is hoping for a three-year sentence, which would give him health care until he qualifies for Medicare. A jail doctor told him he was manipulating the system.
"If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care," Verone said.
One potential kink in Verone's plan: His $1 demand only netted a larceny charge, according to WCNC. He may be looking at less jail time than he thought.
