Tokyo Updates: Durant Passes Anthony As U.S. All-Time Leading Scorer, Mixed 4x400m Relay Wins Bronze

The latest news from Tokyo on Day 8 of the 2020 Olympics

With a week of the Tokyo Olympics down, Team USA enters Day 8 looking to stay atop the medal count leaderboard. The men's golf tournament resumed after weather delay, the fastest woman in the world was crowned and swimming stars Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky added more gold medals.

Kevin Durant Becomes U.S. Men's Basketball Team's All-Time Leading Scorer

Kevin Durant has now scored more points than any other U.S. men's basketball player.

Durant entered Saturday's game against Czech Republic needing six points to surpass Carmelo Anthony and his record of 336 points. He hit an early pull-up 3 and soon followed with a midrange jumper to tie Anthony.

Durant broke the record when he drained a 3 with 6:19 remaining in the half to give him 339 career points -- and counting -- over three Olympic games.

Mixed 4x400m Relay Team Wins Bronze

The U.S. mixed 4x400m relay team of Trevor Stewart, Kendall Ellis, Kaylin Whitney and Vernon Norwood won bronze Sunday morning with a time of 3:10.22.

After an official's error led to an exchange zone foul on the first handoff from Elijah Godwin to Lynna Irby led to a disqualification in the semifinal, the U.S. team appealed the result, won and were reinstated in time for Saturday's final.

Allyson Felix, who competed on the U.S. world record 4x400 mixed relay team in 2019, will did not participate in the relay in Tokyo.

Poland crossed the finish line in first, and the Dominican Republic finished in third.

Bencic Wins Gold in Women's Tennis

Belinda Bencic won Switzerland's second gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics, defeating the Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Bencic won the first ever gold medal in women's singles tennis for Switzerland and fifth tennis medal overall.

She is also vying for another gold medal in women's doubles on Sunday with her partner Viktorija Golubic. The 24-year-old Bencic is 10-0 in her Olympic debut so far.

Elina Svitolina won Ukraine's first tennis medal earlier in the day when she beat Elena Rybakina, 1-6,7-6 (7-5), 6-4 for the bronze medal.

Men's Basketball Defeats Czech Republic, 119-84

Team USA got off to a slow start in their final pool play game against the Czech Republic, but Kevin Durant helped lead them to victory.

He scored 23 points on his way to passing Carmelo Anthony and setting a new American Olympic scoring record. Team USA finishes pool play with a 2-1 record and will move on to the elimination stage next.

USA Baseball Wins Group With Victory Over South Korea

Team USA won its second straight game to open the baseball tournament in Tokyo, defeating defending Olympic champions South Korea 4-2 on Saturday.

After being held to one hit over the first three innings, Triston Casas put Team USA on the board in the fourth inning with a two-run home run. The Americans followed that up with a two-run fifth inning thanks to a Nick Allen homer and an RBI single from Tyler Austin.

Team USA starter Nick Martinez settled down after giving up a run three at-bats into the game. His final line was five innings, four hits allowed, one earned run and nine strikeouts on 87 pitches.

South Korea got the tying run up to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but Team USA sealed the game with a spectacular play from third baseman Jack Lopez.

The U.S. will take on Japan, which won the other group, at 6 a.m. ET on Monday with a berth in the semifinals on the line.

Jamaica's Elaine Thompson Herah Breaks Florence Griffith Joyner's Olympic Record in 100m Final

Jamaica's Elaine Thompson Herah cemented her legacy as one of the greatest sprinters of all-time Saturday morning.

Thompson Herah, crossed the finish line in 10.61 seconds, breaking Florence Griffith Joyner's 33-year-old Olympic record in the process. Thompson Herah now holds the second-fastest time ever.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce holds the third running a 10.63 on June 5. The self-proclaimed "mommy rocket" feared her career was over four years ago when she became pregnant but returned to win the world championship in 2019.

Fraser-Pryce finished in second with a time of 10.74.

American Sha'Carri Richardson was considered to be Fraser-Pryce and Thompson Herah's main threat in the 100m race but was left off the U.S. Olympic team roster after a positive test for THC during the U.S. Trials.

Thompson Herah and Fraser-Pryce will compete for Jamaica in the women's 4x100m relay.

Athing Mu Cruises to Women's 800m Final

Athing Mu looks like the woman to beat in the women's 800m. Mu finished the fastest in the second heat of the semifinals with a time of 1:58.07.

Mu continued to set the pace for the other women in the event and could end up winning gold when the final begins on Aug. 3.

Ajee Wilson finished fourth in the first heat of the semifinals with a time of 2:00.79.

Wilson finished second during her Round 1 heat but had the fastest time of any U.S. athlete finishing in 2:00.02.

Trayvon Bromell Finishes Fourth in Second Men's 100m Heat

Trayvon Bromell, who is expected to contend for gold medal in Tokyo, finished fourth in Round 1 of the men's 100m but qualified for the semifinals.

Bromell ran a 10.05, slower than the top three sprinters in his heat. He will compete in the second heat of the semifinals on Sunday morning for a chance to compete in the finals later in the day.

Maurus Finishes Fourth in Weightlifting Competition

American Harrison Maurus made five lifts in the men’s 81kg weightlifting competition on Saturday morning and finished in fourth place.

Maurus could not complete his final clean and jerk attempt, which caused him to narrowly missed out on a bronze medal.

The 21-year-old American weightlifter can hold his head up high though: He did complete the event’s highest weight attempt of 161kg on the snatch.

World Champion Dina Asher-Smith Withdraws from 200m With Injury

Reigning 200m world champion Dina Asher-Smith was forced to withdraw from 200m event due to a hamstring injury. Asher-Smith narrowly missed out on the 100m final and was named captain of Britain's track and field team.

Asher-Smith was expected to contend for a gold medal against American Gabby Thomas.

JuVaughn Harrison Advances in Men's Long Jump Final

JuVaughn Harrison is the only American that will compete in the men's long jump final on Aug. 2. Harrison qualified for the final with an 8.02-meter jump, the second farthest in his group.

Harrison is the first American since Jim Thorpe in 1912 to compete in both the Olympic long jump and high jump.

Steffin McCarter and Marquis Dendy both failed to make the final with jumps of 7.92m and 7.85m respectively.

Teahna Daniels Makes Women’s 100m Final

Teahna Daniels ran a personal best of 10.98 to finish third in the final heat of the women’s 100m semifinals.

Running in the same heat as Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won the heat with a 10.73 time, Daniels will join the fastest women in the world in a highly anticipated final at 8:50 a.m. ET.

Jenna Prandini Finishes Fourth in First Semifinal Heat

Jenna Prandini, who replaced Sha’Carri Richardson in the women’s 100m semifinal finished fourth and will not qualify for the final. Prandini crossed the finish line in 11.11 seconds behind Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, Switzerland’s Ajla Del Ponte and Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson Herah.

Pablo Carreno Busta Defeats Novak Djokovic in Bronze Medal Match

Novak Djokovic failed to medal in the men's singles tennis tournament at Tokyo.

The world's top-ranked player, who entered the Olympics seeking the Golden Slam, lost the bronze medal match to Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta on Saturday, falling 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Djokovic was clearly upset with the loss and took it out on his racket at several points during the match.

Krysta Palmer Sits in Fifth Ahead of Women's 3m Springboard Final

Krysta Palmer enters the women's 3m springboard final in fifth place. Palmer tallied 316.65 points on five dive attempts.

Her fifth and final dive attempt might have been the most impressive as Palmer scored a 3.4 degree of difficulty along with 71.40 dive points for a forward 2.12 somersaults dive with two twists.

Palmer will attempt to be the first American woman to win an individual diving event since 2000.

American Hailey Hernandez also qualified for the final scoring 291.60 points on her five dive attempts.

The women's 3m springboard final will take place on Sunday morning at 2 a.m. ET.

IOC President Praises Simone Biles: 'Olympic Spirit at its Best'

Simone Biles received high praise from International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach for the way she has handled herself in Tokyo.

Biles withdrew from the team final, all-around final, vault final and uneven bars final to focus on her mental health.

"For Simone, I can only say we are with her and we wish her well," Bach said. "And I must personally say I had the opportunity to briefly talk with her after the team competition, that I'm really admiring how she's handling the situation. That on the one hand she admits to have this problem, this is already courageous. Who one year ago would have admitted mental health problems? And at the same time cheering on her teammates and then being there and supporting when her successor is crowned in the all-around final. This is great human quality and this is Olympic spirit at its best."

Biles will be evaluated daily to determine whether she can compete in the finals for floor exercise and balance beam.

U.S. Women's Rugby Falls to Australia in Fifth-Place Game

With fifth place at stake, the U.S. women's rugby team fell short to Australia on Saturday morning, 17-10.

After a hard hitting first few minutes with some big clashes, Australia was able to move across the field quickly and Faith Nathan scored the first try of the game.

Just before halftime Australia took advantage as Charlotte Caslick was able to force a turnover and find Madison Ashby for the second try of the game.

The U.S., down only 10 with four minutes left, got its first points on the board with a try from Kristi Kirshe.

A successful conversion made the game 10-7 but Australia's Demi Hayes was able to score the game-clinching try and extend the lead.

Xander Schauffele Maintains Lead Through Third Round in Men's Golf

After the completion of the rain-delayed second round plus the third round, the United States' Xander Schauffele remains atop the leaderboard of the men's golf tournament in Tokyo.

Schauffele shot a 3-under 68 in the third round on Saturday to maintain his lead at 14-under. But it's not a comfortable one, with the current top 10 all separated by no more than four strokes.

One stroke off the lead is Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, who shot a 4-under 67 in the third round.

Great Britain's Paul Casey, following a 5-under 66 in the third round, took a share of third at 12-under with Mexico's Carlos Ortiz (2-under 69 in third round).

Columbia's Sebastian Juan Munyoz, Ireland's Rory McIlroy, Chile's Guillermo Pereira and Austria's Sepp Straka each are at 11-under.

Great Britan's Tommy Fleetwood shot a 7-under 64 in the third round to jump into the top 10 on the leaderboard at 10-under. He is tied with Ireland's Shane Lowry.

The fourth and final round is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Brady Ellison Eliminated in Men’s Individual Archery Quarterfinals

Team USA’s Brady Ellison fell to Turkey’s Mete Gazoz 7-3 in the men’s individual archery quarterfinals Saturday morning.

Ellison, who is the best Archer in America, started off the match dropping the first set 27-26, and splitting the second set, 28-28.

Ellison won the third set 28-27 but dropped the last two sets to just fall out of contention for a medal. Gazoz had a perfect score of 30 in the last set, hitting 10’s on all three arrows

Litvinovich Wins Trampoline as Belarus Takes Second Straight Gold

Belarus is home to the men’s trampoline gold medal winner for the second straight Olympics.

Ivan Litvinovich won the event with a score of 61.715, topping China's Dong Dong, who scored a 61.235.

The 20-year-old follows in the footsteps of Uladzislau Hancharou, who won gold for Belarus at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Hancharou narrowly missed medaling on Saturday, finished fourth with a score of 60.565. He was just behind New Zealand's Dylan Schmidt, who took bronze with a 60.675.

U.S. Men's Water Polo Team Falls to 2-2 With Loss to Hungary

The offense for the U.S. men's water polo team went silent early in the second half, leading to an 11-8 loss to Hungary.

The U.S. led 4-3 in the first half but then allowed six unanswered goals by Hungary. That scoring drought ended with Alex Obert's goal that pulled the U.S. within 9-5 with 6:20 remaining. Luca Cupido followed with a goal on the ensuing possession to make it a three-goal game.

A goal by Hannes Daube with 3:08 remaining cut the deficit to 9-7, but Krisztian Manhercz answered with a goal to push the lead back to three and all but seal the victory.

Manhercz had a game-high three goals. Bowen and Ben Hallock each had two goals for the U.S.

With both Group A teams having previously qualified for the quarterfinals, but with seeding still on the line, the U.S. fell to 2-2 and Hungary improved to 3-1.

Team USA Wins Mixed Team Trap Bronze Medal Match

The United States have earned a bronze medal in the Olympic mixed team trap competition.

Americans Madelynn Ann Bernau and Brian Burrows battled for the bronze medal against Slovakia's Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova and Erik Varga. The U.S. came out victorious in an intense match that went to a sudden-death shoot off.

Team USA Women's Volleyball No Longer Undefeated in Tokyo After Loss to ROC

The United States women's volleyball team is no longer undefeated in Tokyo after falling in three sets to the Russian Olympic Committee. Team USA lost 25-20 in the first set, 25-12 in the second and 25-19 in the third.

United States superstar Jordan Thompson left the game with an apparent injury.

Next up for the United States is a game against Italy on Sunday at 10:05 p.m. ET to finish out pool play. Team USA is already assured a spot in quarterfinals, which start on Tuesday.

Jordan Thompson Leaves USA Volleyball Match with Injury

American star volleyball player Jordan Thompson left Team USA's match against the ROC early in the second set with an apparent injury.

Thompson, who has been on fire and is the United States' leading point-scorer in Tokyo, landed hard on her ankle from a block and was immediately removed from the game.

The United States lost the first set against the Russian Olympic Committee 25-20.

Team USA Doesn't Medal in First-Ever Olympic Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay

The United States missed the podium in the inaugural mixed 4x100m medley relay final.

Great Britain won the gold medal, China took home silver and Australia won bronze.

Team USA's quartet was made up of Ryan Murphy, Lydia Jacoby, Torri Huske and Caeleb Dressel.

Katie Ledecky Wins Third-Straight Gold in Women's 800m Freestyle

Star swimmer Katie Ledecky has won her third-straight Olympic gold medal in the women's 800m freestyle final.

This is Ledecky's sixth career individual gold medal, making it the most of any female swimmer.

Australia's Ariarne Titmus won the silver medal while Italy's Simona Quadarella took home bronze.

Simone Biles Withdraws from Vault and Uneven Bars Finals

American gymnast Simone Biles won't compete in the vault and uneven bars event finals.

Biles will be continue to be evaluated to see if she can compete in the finals for floor exercise and balance beam.

MyKayla Skinner will replace Biles in the vault finals.

Team USA Women's Rugby Beats China to Advance

The United States women's rugby sevens team beat China 33-14 on Friday night.

The Americans were eliminated from medal contention by Great Britain in the quarterfinal round early Friday, but will now advance to play Australia for fifth place at 4 a.m. on Saturday.

They finished fifth in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Caeleb Dressel Wins Gold in Record Finish of Men's 100m Butterfly

American Caeleb Dressel set a new world record in his gold medal win during the men's 100m butterfly final on Friday. It is Dressel's second individual medal in Tokyo.

Kristof Milak of Hungary finished second for silver and Noe Ponti of Switzerland earned bronze.

Nigerian Sprinter Blessing Okagbare Out of Tokyo Olympics After Failing Drug Test

Sprinter Blessing Okagbare from Nigeria was suspended, and is now out of the Olympics, after a positive test for human growth hormone. She was set to compete in the women’s 100m semifinals on Saturday.

Okagbare tested positive in an out-of-competition test on July 19, but the Athletics Integrity Unit only found out on Friday.

Okagbare had already run in the 100m heat, which she won in 11.05 seconds to progress to the semis.

Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil Undefeated in Pool Play

American beach volleyball duo Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil beat Brazil's Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Rebecca Silva on Friday night in three sets.

Team USA lost the first set 21-17 before winning the next two 21-19 and 15-11.

Claes and Sponcil are now 3-0 in pool play, putting them in a good position for the round of 16 starting on Saturday.

Anna Cockrell, Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad Advance in Women's 400m Hurdles

The American trio of Anna Cockrell, Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad have advanced to the semifinals in the women's 400m hurdles.

Cockrell was the first to qualify, finishing the first heat with a time of 55.37. McLaughlin cruised to a first place finish in Heat 3 with a time of 54.65. Defending champion Muhammad closed out Heat 5 in first place, posting a time of 53.97.

The semifinals will take place on Monday at 7:35 a.m. ET.

Team USA Wins Silver Medal in First Triathlon Mixed Relay

The United States has won the silver medal in the first-ever Olympic triathlon mixed relay.

Great Britain earned the gold medal, and France finished third for the bronze.

Each team was comprised of two men and two women. Each team member swam for 300 meters, cycled for 8 kilometers and ran for 2 kilometers.

The American team was made up of Katie Zaferes, Kevin McDowell, Taylor Knibb and Morgan Pearson. Zaferes won the bronze medal in the women's triathlon on Monday.

Men's Golf Round 2 Resumed After Weather Delay

Repeated weather delays yesterday meant that 16 golfers were unable to finish Round 2 of the men's tournament.

Team USA's Xander Schauffele, who did finish Round 2, sunk two eagles that helped bring him to 11-under and one stroke ahead of Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz atop the Tokyo Olympics leaderboard.

Play resumed at 6:45 p.m. ET, and Schauffele remained in the lead.

Round 3 is expected to tee off around 8:30 p.m. ET.

United States Enters Day 8 With 41 Medals

After seven days of competition are complete in Tokyo, Team USA has a total of 41 medals.

The American athletes have earned 14 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Just behind them sits China with 40 medals, followed by the ROC with 34, Japan with 28 and Great Britain with 24.

Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky Both Have Eyes on More Gold

American swimming superstars Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky will both look to add to their hardware on Friday night, starting at 9:30 p.m. ET.

World record-holder Dressel will compete in the men's 100m butterfly final, and will swim in the mixed 4x100m medley relay final.

Ledecky will swim for her third-straight Olympic gold medal in the women's 800m freestyle after first winning it at the 2012 London Olympics.
