The alarm du jour out of Madison Square Garden is Eddy Curry's panic attack over news he hasn't secured a spot in Mike D'Antoni's rotation heading into the team's season opener Wednesday. D'Antoni told reporters Curry won't play Wednesday and is not a part of the team's current eight- to nine-man rotation. Andrew Marchand of ESPN.com asked Curry how it felt to hear the news:
"Definitely stunned, especially being that [D'Antoni] didn't tell me that," Curry said Tuesday. "I haven't talked to him. I'm here with him every day. All he has to do is tell me. I'm definitely stunned to hear that."
D'Antoni introduced the "Seven Seconds or Less" offense to the modern NBA in 2004. It takes Curry longer than seven seconds to get from foul line to foul line. D'Antoni was hired in May, giving Curry five months to get in the best shape of his life. That didn't happen, and Curry has been out of his element all preseason.
On what planet, given those circumstances, should Curry be stunned to hear he'll be watching the Knicks from the bench? The team's gonna run, and you can't run. 1+1=2. C'est un pipe. Some might consider D'Antoni a mad scientist who flips estimations by doing the unexpected ... but playing Curry in his current state is too far into space for even a maniac like D'Antoni. If Curry wants to play, maybe he needs to switch teams with Al Harrington: Nellie's the only coach insane enough to squeeze Eddy into a high-tempo system.
