Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot multiple times Sunday evening during an attempted robbery, law enforcement sources told News4. The team confirmed the news in a statement Sunday night.

Robinson's injuries from the shooting are not life-threatening, sources close to the situation told NBC Sports Washington's JP Finlay.

The incident occurred in Northeast Washington in the 1000 block of H Street at about 5:30 p.m., D.C. police said.

The suspects allegedly tried to take Robinson's Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, upon which a scuffle ensued and the shots were fired, according to authorities. Robinson was taken to a hospital following the incident.

Police said a gun was recovered on scene and that they were looking for two juveniles described as having shoulder-length dreadlocks and wearing black or brown shirts with yellow smiley faces. Anyone with information is asked to contact D.C. police.

The Commanders said in a statement Sunday night that team officials were "on-site" with Robinson.

"I just got done visiting w/Brian. He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support," Head Coach Ron Rivera wrote in a tweet Sunday night. "He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best."

Rivera said he could not comment on the specifics of Robinson's condition but said Monday that Robinson was "very fortunate" in an "unfortunate situation."

There is no timeline yet for Robinson to return to the field, Rivera said.

The 23-year-old was selected in the third round of the most recent NFL draft and, after a strong preseason, was trending toward a major role in the team's offense during the 2022 regular season.
