The Jets Might Not Have Any Receivers Sunday

The good news on the Jets injury front is that Brett Favre says his arm is fine. There was some worry that weeks of pounding were taking their toll on his aging wing but the quarterback assured everyone he was ready and raring to go this weekend.

Who is going to catch his throws, though? Laveranues Colesmissed practice yesterday with what was called a "head" injury and Jerricho Cotchery has been bothered by a shoulder injury he suffered in Oakland. Cotchery practiced, albeit in a limited fashion, which makes Coles's injury the more pressing matter for the team. After a shaky start to their relationship, he and Favre have clicked over the last few games.

The nature of his injury is a concern as well. Coles has a long concussion history, including one that ended his season at the halfway point last year, and if he's had another one it may be a while before he's back on the field. As much as that may hurt the Jets, they've got to be careful with how quickly Coles returns. It benefits them by ensuring he'll be healthy when he plays and it benefits Coles by trying to make sure the rest of his life isn't a nightmare of pain caused by one hit to the head too many.

For the team, though, the injuries to the starting wideouts mean that it will be that much harder for the offense to establish an identity. They've veered wildly from run-focused to chuck and duck to everything in between and we'll likely see a whole new approach to work around the injuries. Thankfully it's the Chiefs this weekend but, at this point, there may not be any easy wins for a Jets team that can't get out of first gear.
