Spagnuolo Named New St. Louis Rams Head Coach

Giants defensive coordinator accepts 4-year deal worth almost $12 million

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been named the new coach of the St. Louis Rams, according to a report.

According to Saturday's St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Spagnuolo signed a four-year contract in the neighborhood of $12 million.

Spagnuolo became a hot commodity late last season when he designed a stubborn defense that helped lead the Giants to a surprising Super Bowl championship. That defense harassed New England's Tom Brady all day, keeping the star quarterback and his dangerous offense at bay, and also keeping the Patriots from becoming the first team in NFL history to finish a season 19-0.

After losing Michael Strahan to retirement and Osi Umenyiora to injury, Spagnuolo's defense still was among the better units in the NFC in 2008. It certainly was not to blame for the Giants early exit in last week's postseason opener.

Prior to his time with the Giants, Spagnuolo worked for the Eagles, Chargers and Redskins.

By 5 p.m. Saturday, the Giants had taken Spagnuolo's name off the team's Web site.
