Second Seton Hall Player Arrested

The Big East is going down hard.

Police have arrested a second former Seton Hall men's basketball player on charges stemming from an armed robbery in New Jersey.

Police arrested Kelly Whitney at a Newark Hotel around 11 p.m. on Thursday night, and the Essex County Prosecutor's office says the 27-year-old acted as an accomplice with former junior forward Robert Mitchell.

The 23-year-old Mitchell has pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of robbing eight people at gunpoint in a South Orange home on Monday.

Mitchell was arrested on Tuesday when South Orange officers spotted him in the vicinity of South Orange Avenue and Poe Avenue in Newark.

Whitney and Mitchell, according to prosecutors, made eight  residents in the home move from various rooms into a common area and forced them to turn over personal items including credit/debit cards, cell phones, driver's licenses, digital cameras, as well as about $300 in cash.

Mitchell was kicked off the team Sunday. Whitney is a Chicago native who was a standout for the Pirates through the 2006 season.

Carter says Whitney faces robbery, kidnapping and weapons charges. No court appearance has been scheduled and it's not clear if he has a lawyer.
