Rangers land D Morris

New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Derek Morris from Phoenix prior to Wednesday's trade deadline. In return, the Coyotes landed defenseman Dmitri Kalinin and forwards Petr Prucha and Nigel Dawes.

Morris, who will be a free agent at the end of this season, was a healthy scratch for last Saturday's game versus St. Louis after coming to an agreement with the Coyotes to be traded. He had five goals and seven assists in 57 games with Phoenix this year.

The 30-year-old blueliner was acquired by the Coyotes from Colorado on March 9, 2004 along with Keith Ballard for Ossi Vaananen, Chris Gratton and a second-round choice in 2005 that the Avalanche used to select Paul Stastny.

In 775 career games with Flames, Avalanche and Coyotes, Morris has totaled 76 goals and 256 assists for 332 points. He was selected in the first round of the 1996 draft by Calgary.

Prucha compiled a total of 52 goals over two seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07, but has just 11 markers in 90 games since then. The 26-year-old Czech was selected by the Rangers in the eighth round of the 2002 draft and has 113 points (63 goals, 50 assists) in 237 career games. Prucha has four goals and five assists in 28 games this season.

Dawes has 10 goals and 19 points in 52 games with the Rangers this year. The 23-year-old has 25 goals and 24 assists in 121 career games.

Kalinin was signed by New York to a one-year, $2.1 million deal in the offseason and had one goal and 12 assists in 58 games with the Rangers this year. The 28-year-old Russian blueliner was drafted by Buffalo in the first round of the 1998 draft and spent his entire career with the Sabres before signing with New York.
