NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Simon Gagne had a goal and two assists to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils in an Atlantic Division battle at the Wachovia Center.

Danny Briere had a goal and an assist while Jeff Carter and Mike Knuble each scored for the Flyers, who have won three straight. Martin Biron made 32 saves in the win.

With the victory, the Flyers now have 90 points with a solid lock on the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. Additionally, Philly still has an outside chance to grab the division, but it will be a tough battle as the team is seven points back of New Jersey. The Flyers have 10 games left while New Jersey has nine remaining.

Philadelphia finished the game 3-for-3 on the power play and killed off seven of New Jersey's eight power-play opportunities.

Jamie Langenbrunner and Brendan Shanahan each had a goal for the Devils, who have dropped three of their last four games. Marty Brodeur stopped 21 shots in the loss.

With the score tied early in the third, Philly took the lead courtesy of the power play. Kimmo Timonen had the puck at the right point and let fly with a wrister that Carter was able to deflect past Brodeur just 55 seconds in for his 40th goal of the season.

A bit over two minutes later, the Flyers made it a 4-2 game. Gagne fed the puck to Claude Giroux, who appeared to be skating around the net from the left side. However, as he got to the back of the net he dished it behind his back to Gagne, who snapped it past a surprised Brodeur for his 30th goal of the year.

A few minutes after that, the Flyers' penalty killers were put to work as Daniel Carcillo was called for a double minor on a high stick. They were able to keep the chances to a minimum over those four minutes to preserve the two- goal lead.

Philly had to kill off one more penalty in the game, as Matt Carle was called for delay of game after flipping the puck over the glass and again the PK came up with a big stop to help the team preserve the victory.

The Devils drew first blood just 9:42 into the game as Dainius Zubrus flung a pass from the right side of the net to the left, where it went off the skate of Shanahan and slid past Biron.

However, the Flyers answered on the power play later in the first. Gagne held the puck at the right boards and sent it to the high slot for Timonen, who fired a hard pass down to the right side of the net, where Briere redirected it past Brodeur with 4:03 left in the frame.

Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead on the power play at the 4:45 mark of the second period. Knuble picked up a loose puck in the slot with Devils all around him and slid it over to Briere at the left side. Knuble then charged to the left side and Briere threw it over. Knuble gathered the disc and wristed it into the net for his 26th goal of the season.

The Devils, though, were able to tie the game as Philadelphia took a string of penalties.

A too many men on the ice call led to a New Jersey power play that helped the team tie the game. Langenbrunner slid into the slot and fired home a rebound halfway though the second period.

New Jersey then had three consecutive power plays, but Philadelphia and Biron were able to kill all of them off to keep the game tied heading into the third period.
