Brett Favre has been under fire in recent weeks for his mediocre play, but he made in a victory over division rival Buffalo last week when he just tossed one pick-six. Sunday against the Rams, the Jets didn't put Favre in a position to have to lead a game-winning drive because the outcome was pretty much decided midway through the second quarter.
In fact, Favre would only throw 19 passes, completing 14 for 167 yards and a touchdown.No idea if it was the game plan going in, but the pass was used to set up the run; Thomas Jones finished the afternoon with 149 yards on 26 carries, and for the second time this season, he scored three touchdowns. As a team, the Jets put points on the board on each of their seven first-half possessions, and that, coupled with a another suffocating defensive effort (the Rams had four turnovers and three punts in seven series), resulted in a 40-0 halftime lead.
St. Louis would only get three second half possessions (they mustered one field goal, so it's progress, I suppose), thanks in part to New York's 11-minute drive to end things, mercifully, 47-3.
Jones' brilliant effort overshadowed a breakout performance from rookie tight end Dustin Keller, who hauled in six catches for 107 yards (one TD), and Leon Washington continued his yeoman's service, rushing for 54 yards on 12 carries, 14 more on pass receptions, as well as his work as a kick and punt returner.
With the victory, the Jets, 6-3, remain tied atop the division with the Patriots, who they will face this Thursday night in New England. There are still six weeks left in the season, but the next game will determine the eventual winner of the AFC East.
