Martin Brodeur Weighs in on the Sean Avery Controversy

Last week, Sean Avery set the hockey world on fire -- and the blogosphere in particular -- with his comments about Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert.

Just in case you were hoping the story would finally go away, well, it's not. In fact, this situation is still on fire, burning through the weekend and maybe even into next week.

The latest revelation in Avery-gate is that Martin Broduer, who is hurt and not playing right now, still can't resist taking shots at Avery. According to Devils blog Fire & Ice, Brodeur weighed in on the issue in Montreal's Le Journal during the Devils' trip to Montreal this weekend.

Brodeur weighed in on the Sean Avery suspension in his column this week in Le Journal in Montreal. It's in French, so Rich Chere asked one of the airport employees to translate.

According to her, Brodeur wrote that Avery's "sloppy seconds" coment about his ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert was "unacceptable."

"The NHL should punish him with a suspension because he doesn't act professionally." Brodeur wrote.

Of course, Brodeur has had his own run-ins with Avery and clearly is not a fan. But his take on the Avery situation sounds tamer than you might have expected given their past.

Tamer, indeed. This seems more along the lines of the standard reaction many people have around the league. If you remember, Brodeur and Avery had their own front-page feud last season when Avery was still in New York and used some creative tactics in the offensive zone, which irked Broudeur, leading Avery to call the Devils' net-minder 'fatso.' It's really a match made in heaven.

Anyway, I've got to give some credit to Brodeur. I've bashed him in the past for stooping to Avery's level when he is provoked, but not this time. He really didn't say anything all too surprising. Maybe that's because what Avery did this time had nothing to do with him.
