Jose Canseco, Ex-Slugger, Steroid User, Appears in Court on Drug Charges

Faces up to year in prison

A former Major League baseball star who was detained at the U.S.-Mexico border last week was in federal court Tuesday.

Jose Canseco -- who, along with Mark McGwire made his baseball name with the Oakland A’s as one of the Bash Brothers -- remained silent in court when told by Judge Ruben Brooks that he was being charged with misdemeanor introduction to interstate commerce of a misbranded drug.

The ex-slugger had nothing to say after the legal proceedings, either.

"I'm not commenting at all," Canseco said on his way out of court.

Human chorionic gonadotropin was found Thursday when Canseco was attempting to crossed into San Diego, according to authorities. The drug is illegal to possess without a prescription and is sometimes used to help restore production of testosterone lost by the use of steroids. Three years ago, Canseco admitted in his book that he had used steroids.

Canseco faces a fine of up to $1,000 fine and as much as a year in prison if he’s convicted. He is due back in court on Nov. 4.
