Former 49ers DE Ray McDonald's Sex Assault Trial Gets Started

Update: Ray McDonald's court date was continued to April 4, 2016.

The sexual assault trial of a former San Francisco 49ers star was set to begin Monday in California's South Bay.

Ray McDonald pleaded not guilty in September to charges in an alleged sexual assault at his San Jose home in December 2014 and violating a restraining order.

McDonald, 31, entered the plea during his arraignment after he was indicted in by a grand jury on charges of raping an intoxicated woman and violating a protective order at McDonald's home at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club.

If convicted, McDonald faces up to eight years in prison.

The grand jury also indicted 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks in the misdemeanor sexual battery case involving the same woman on that same night.

McDonald was a defensive lineman with the 49ers until the sexual assault allegations came to light. He signed with the Chicago Bears for a one-year deal, but was cut from the team in May when he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.
