Sanford on Vacation, This Time With Wife

Mark and Jenny Sanford will be on vacation together through the weekend, Sanford’s office confirmed.

South Carolina GOP Gov. Mark Sanford has cleared his schedule this week to get out of town, this time with his wife.

Mark and Jenny Sanford will be on vacation together through the weekend, Sanford’s office confirmed Wednesday.

“The governor remains committed to repairing the damage he’s done to his marriage, and so it shouldn’t be any surprise that spending personal time with his wife is a part of that process,” Sanford communications director Joel Sawyer wrote in an e-mail.

Sawyer would not say where South Carolina’s first couple had gone or give any additional information, explaining that “out of respect for their privacy, we’re not discussing further details.”

Both Mark and Jenny Sanford have repeatedly said they intend to try to work out problems in their marriage that were exposed in June when the governor admitted to an affair with an Argentine mistress whom he later referred to as his “soul mate.”

Sanford faced numerous calls for his resignation following the announcement, which were later tempered following a show of support from his wife.

“Mark has stated that his intent and determination is to save our marriage and to make amends to the people of South Carolina,” Jenny Sanford said in July 3 statement. “I hope he can make good on those intentions, and for the sake of our boys, I leave the door open to it. In that spirit of forgiveness, it is up to the people and elected officials of South Carolina to decide whether they will give Mark another chance, as well.”
