The city Department of Education has sent a letter to the state Education Department outlining its teacher training and evaluation goals and the steps it has taken to implement them.
The memo sent Monday was in response to a letter from the state last month after New York City was one of few districts around the state that failed to meet a deadline to come up with a teacher evaluation system. Missing the deadline cost city schools millions of dollars in state and federal aid, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo has vowed to implement a system if Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the teachers' union can't agree on one by September.
State Commissioner of Education John King had asked for the information in a letter to the city last month, saying the city was at risk for losing more aid if it couldn't show that it was taking steps to prepare for a new evaluation system.
The city said its evaluation plans included things like the implementation and use of student feedback surveys as well as specific considerations for teachers who are dealing with students who are English language learners and students with disabilities. Training goals including job-embedded professional development, as well as webinars and other resources.
The city DOE said it had also started putting together means of assessing students' learning in core subject areas.
The United Federation of Teachers said it was reviewing the memo. The Council of School Supervisors and Administrators declined comment.
