A Wesleyan student who was in isolation and being monitored for the Coronavirus after exhibiting some symptoms following a trip to Asia does not have the virus, school officials said.

Wesleyan school officials said they were working with the state Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control to determine if the student had contracted the Coronavirus or not.

The CDC has reported that the Wesleyan tested negative for the coronavirus and the student is doing well, school officials said Monday.

According to school officials, the student was traveling internationally in Asia and had symptoms, including a fever and cough. The student had been back approximately 48 to 72 hours, according to Medical Director Dr. Tom McLarney.

The student was currently in isolation and the school provided healthcare and other services, officials said.

"We took the road of precaution, contacted not only the players at the university but also the state health department for their guidance," McLarney said.

"The precaution is being taken because the student was recently in an airport with someone who had the virus. Even in the worst case scenario, there is no risk here that the person contracted it from another, unreported case in Middletown," Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim said over the weekend.

The school said they were in contact with everyone the student had close contact after returning to campus to monitor them and none of those people showed symptoms of concern.

"Our two goals are first and foremost, take care of the student but also protect our students, our faculty and protect our community," McLarney said.

"We are taking this very seriously, but there is no cause for panic. Our public health professionals are here to do what they do best," Florsheim said over the weekend.
