Transformers Sequel Transforms Hollywood Revenues

Hit movie sells 2 million discs in 24 hours

Paramount/Dreamworks' "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" added some action to the sagging Hollywood economy. The hit sequel arrived in stores October 20 and within 24 hours sold 2 million discs, according to industry sources cited in the Hollywood Reporter. Sales had been down 13.9% for the year.

Previously, "X-men Origins: Wolverine" had slashed the competition, having sold more than 500,000 Blu-ray copies to fans.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment also scored some wins. For the week of October 18, "The Proposal" with Sandra Bullock debuted No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Home Media Magazine's rental chart, according to the Reporter. "Snow White" remained the top-selling Blu-ray Disc for a second consecutive week.

The sales boosts were welcome news to many industry observers. One expert in the Reporter said, "I think we're all breathing a lot easier."
