“RoboCop” Remake May Have a New Director

It's been a busy few weeks for Officer Alex Murphy.

First, citizens of Detroit have been lobbying hard for the city to erect a "RoboCop" statue (much to the chargin of mayor Dave Bing), and now comes word that the long-gestating remake of the 1987 cult classic may finally be moving forward.

According to Collider, Brazilian director Jose Padilha is close to signing on for a fresh take on the story of a murdered Detroit cop (played in the original film by Peter Weller) who returns to active duty when he's used as the organic battery inside an experimental cyborg body.

Back in 2008, "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky was close to bringing a new "RoboCop" movie to the screen, but the project eventually fell apart due to financial difficulties. There were even rumors that Frank Miller ("Sin City," "The Spirit") would take the helm - not such a big stretch, seeing as Miller wrote both "RoboCop 2" and "RoboCop 3" in addition to shepherding the Marvel Comics spin-off series.

Padilha doesn't have a huge body of work, but he did direct the acclaimed action film "Elite Squad," which clearly shows his comfort level with guns, violence, and urban decay. And, really, when you're talking RoboCop, what more do you need?

We can't wait for the first leaked concept photos of the new 'Cop, just for the inevitable fanboy outrage.

In the meantime, get a taste of Padilha's "Elite Squad"...
