The three Afghanistan National Army officers who disappeared during a training exercise on Cape Cod before being caught trying to cross into Canada in Niagara Falls, New York, fear they will be killed if sent home.

The men were interviewed by The Boston Globe at a federal detention facility in Batavia, New York, where they are being held.

They watched a YouTube video to find the best way to cross into Canada, where one of them has an uncle. They made their getaway during a shopping outing and spent more than $1,600 on taxis to travel from Massachusetts to the border.

One of them, Maj. Jan Mohammad Arash, says the Taliban targets Afghan officers.

They are seeking asylum in either the U.S. or Canada. They have immigration hearings Wednesday.
