There were plenty thrills of victory at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, but there were also many agonies of defeat (and a few slips and stumbles thrown in for good measure). Here are some of the moments we will always remember, but a few images we'd really like to forget.
French gymnast Samir Ait Said suffered perhaps the most gruesome injury of the Games when he fractured his tibia while trying to land on vault. Despite his leg being bent grotesquely at a nearly 90-degree angle, Said is already planning a comeback for the 2020 Games.
There was much concern for Dutch cyclist Annemiek Van Vleuten, who suffered a horrific crash while leading the women's road race for gold. She flew headfirst over the handlebars of her bike and hit the curb. She was hospitalized with three small fractures in her spine as well as a severe concussion.
Niek Kimmann of the Netherlands crashed so hard in the BMX quarterfinals his bike broke into three pieces. But the 2015 world champion didn't let that stop him. He picked up the biggest piece and carried it across the finish line, and that ultimately helped him advance to the next round due to other riders crashing out as well.
U.S. runner Abbey D'Agostino got tangled up with Nikki Hamblin after the New Zealander fell during a 5000m qualifier. D'Agostino helped Hamblin up in a great show of sportsmanship, but then fell again after her knee buckled, allowing Hamblin return the favor. Both eventually finished the race, but D'Agostino's Olympics were over. She suffered a torn ACL and a torn meniscus. But she gained respect across the world for her willingness to help a competitor.
There were plenty of painful moments during the showjumping round of modern pentathlon. Here's Justinas Kinderis of Lithuania, for example taking a tumble off of a horse he met just 20 minutes before his Olympic run.
Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan made history by becoming the oldest gymnast to compete in the Olympics at the age of 41. With nothing to lose, Chusovitina decided to try the "Vault of Death" during the finals. It didn't end in death, luckily, but it also wasn't pretty. She escaped unhurt and has talked about trying to make the 2020 Games.
Elissa Downie of Great Britain landed awkwardly on her neck and head while attempting a tumble on the floor exercise. She was woozy and tried to continue, but eventually had to be taken out of the arena via wheelchair. Incredibly, she came back a day later and nailed two vault attempts to help her team in the standings.
Robbie Sanderson, one of the German grooms, received a nasty kick to the head by a spooked horse he was parading around the field during the gold medal ceremony. Sanderson had to be helped to his feet after the incident, but managed to put a smile on his face. No word on if Sanderson and the horse, Cosmo, have made amends.
France's Yohann Diniz suffered a series of unfortunate incidents during the men's 50 km race walk. He appeared to have suffered a, ahem, gastrointestinal accident about 49 minutes into the race. Footage shared on social media captured a brown substance trickling down his leg, as he charged ahead in the lead. He then collapsed, laying on the ground for several minutes before managing to get back up and finish the race.
