Database Can Help Icelandic Lovers Avoid Dating a Relative

Genealogical data reportedly goes back 1,200 years

Blind dates can be bad. Blind dates with your cousin are worse.

Icelanders could face a real problem – the possibility of dating a relative. But an online database can help avoid such a scenerio, The Global Times reported.

The Íslendinabók database contains Icelandic genealogical data from over the past 1,200 years. Its website boasts that the service can trace all known family connections between Icelanders since the country was settled.

With a population of 300,000, Icelanders are at a higher risk of dating an unknown relative than people from larger countries.

Elin Edda told The Global Times that one of her friends "really liked this guy and then found out they had the same great-grandparents.”

The database works for more than just dates – cross reference your name and the name of your favorite Icelandic celebrity and who knows, you might just be related! One man told the Global Post that Íslendinabók told him he and Bjork were family.

Access to Íslendinabók is limited to Icelandic citizens and legal residents. The site has been online since 1997.
