Here Are 3 Paths Lawmakers Could Take to an Independent Russia Inquiry

After the president’s surprise dismissal of FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, Democrats, and even some Republican members of Congress, sounded calls for a new, independent investigation into possible Donald Trump campaign ties to Russia. 

As NBC News reports, lawmakers are proposing three different avenues toward an independent Russia probe. 

Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein could appoint a special counsel to oversee the investigation at any time. 

Lawmakers could pass legislation approving a special counsel, which would be a long-shot because it would require bipartisan support and Trump's signature or two-thirds approval in a GOP-controlled Congress to override a presidential veto.

Finally, Congress could form an independent commission with subpoena power and that would issue a report.
