The death toll from coronavirus in Connecticut surpassed 4,000 on Thursday. The state saw 18 more fatalities, bringing the toll to 4,007 since the pandemic began in March.

There were 148 new cases since Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases to 43,239.

Hospitalizations continued to decline, with a net drop in coronavirus-related hospitalizations of 33, according to Gov. Ned Lamont.

Municipal Relief

The governor was joined during a news conference on Thursday by Melissa McCaw, Secretary of the Connecticut Office of Policy and Management, for an announcement about relief for the state's municipalities.

The $75 million Municipal Coronavirus Relief Fund will be available to cities and towns across Connecticut to help reimburse them for direct COVID-related costs through June 30. The program will be re-evaluated after that, McCaw said.

Indoor Dining

The governor said he will stick with his decision to keep restaurants restricted to outdoor-dining until June 20. More than 550 restaurant owners sent Lamont a letter on Wednesday asking him to allow indoor dining beginning on June 10.

"I've just seen tens of thousands of people protesting in New York City - thousands more in Boston. Neither of them have opened up any of their restaurants - they haven't even opened for outdoor dining that I know of as yet," Lamont said. "So I want to be very careful before we open our restaurants and invite people from the whole region here."

Reopening Gyms

The reopening of gyms will be a part of Phase 2 of the state's plan, which begins on June 20. Lamont said he would release details on what restrictions would be placed on gyms on Monday.
