BRITA Recalls Children's Water Bottles Due to Laceration Hazard

Four varieties of children’s water bottles produced by Brita were recalled Tuesday after it was discovered that the lids can break into sharp pieces, posing a laceration hazard.

The bottles, designed with popular cartoon characters, stand at 6 inches tall, hold 15 ounces of liquid and have white screw-top lids with fold-up straws and filters. Characters include Dora the Explorer on a violet bottle; SpongeBob Square Pants on a blue bottle; Hello Kitty on a pink bottle; and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on a green bottle.

Brita, who produced about 242,500 of the bottles, received 35 reports of lids breaking or cracking. No injuries have been reported.

The bottles were sold at Target, Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, among other retailers. Hello Kitty bottles were sold from February 2014 through July 2014. Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob Square Pants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bottles were sold from June 2013 through July 2014. The bottles sold for $13 to $19.
