Natural Cures for Joint Pain

About one-third of adults in America experience joint discomfort or arthritic pain, and there are an estimated 21 million Americans currently living with osteoarthritis. Here are a few options to decrease inflammation, arthritis and joint pain.

-A study funded by the National Institutes of Health, (New England Journal of Medicine, 2006) concluded that a combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin provided statistically significant relief in treating moderate to severe knee pain.  The study, known as the Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), was a rigorous, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study that included more than 1,200 patients across 13 medical centers.  Products containing both Glucosamine and Chondroitin are found in both pill and now liquid formulations.

-Recent research has shown that eating the wrong foods can cause inflammation within our bodies. In fact being overweight can itself be the cause of inflammation. Foods that fight inflamamation include broccoli, red peppers, sardines, salmon, flaxseed and many others.

-Icing after exercise is an effective way to decrease inflammation and speed recovery.  Ice packs should not stay on the skin longer than a half-hour according to industry experts.

-Creating a strength training program that promotes muscle balance and flexibility is crucial in preventing and easing joint pain.
