Women Fight Off Man Trying to Steal 4-Month-Old Baby on Subway: Police

A mother and another straphanger fought off a man who tried to steal the mother's 4-month-old baby from the child's carrier on a subway in Brooklyn over the weekend after he was asked to leave them alone, police say.

The man, later identified as 30-year-old Rafael Martinez, allegedly sat down next to the 22-year-old mother on a J train in East New York around 11 p.m. Sunday and began talking to her, according to police.

When the mother asked Martinez to leave, he allegedly tried to snatch the baby carrier with the child still in it. The mother, along with a 46-year-old woman who was sitting next to her, fought him off, and two other people restrained the suspect until police came, officials said.

According to the Daily News, the 46-year-old woman was the baby's grandmother.

Police arrested Martinez, who is from Brooklyn, at the Fulton and Alabama Street subway stop and charged with attempted kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a controlled substance, authorities said.

Martinez has at least 20 prior arrests, police said. According to the News, he suffers from mental illness and has tried to commit suicide at least twice.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could comment on the recent allegations.
