Woman Who Stopped to Help at Crash Site Falls to Death

A South Carolina woman stopped to help at a crash scene before falling to her death off a bridge on Sunday, NBC News reported.

Jessica Nicole Smith, 29, a certified nursing assistant, was looking for injured victims at a crash on Interstate 385 in Greenville County.

The county coroner said it was believed that she heard a voice over the edge of the bridge, thinking the ground was close. She attempted to climb over the edge and help, but fell 23 feet to the base of the bridge and died.

Smith's sister, Hope Smith, said the family is "heartbroken and empty" over the tragedy, according to NBC affiliate WYFF, of Greenville. She said she will take in her sister's 9-year-old son and raise him as her own.
