The University of North Texas is the latest Texas public school to release their policy for campus carry which takes effect on Aug. 1, 2016.
The UNT System Board of Regents accepted UNT’s Campus Carry Policy Friday at a meeting.
The policy prohibits open carry on the UNT campus, which means, openly carrying a handgun on the campus premises. However, it does allow those who have a handgun license to carry a concealed handgun while on the campus.
The policy also outlined where campus carry is prohibited, even to those who hold a license.
The policy stated that concealed handguns will not be allowed at athletic events on the UNT campus. It also said that students who have a handgun license and live on the UNT campus, may bring their gun into the dorms and store it in their room.
In September 2015, UNT President Neal Smatresk appointed a Campus Cary Task Force to recommend campus carry policies and guidelines for UNT. The task force was comprised of UNT students, faculty, staff and administrators.
President Neal Smatresk presented the task force’s final policy draft to the UNT community for feedback in January.
