Dennis Edwards, former vocalist of the Temptations, has died in Chicago at the age of 74, the band announced Friday.

"He is now at peace, and our love and prayers go out to his family. At this moment and always, we acknowledge his extraordinary contribution to The Temptations legacy, which lives on in the music." the group said in a statement.

The three-time Grammy winner died Thursday night, just two days before his 75th birthday, according to Motown Records. Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. said he visited Edwards at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago before he "slept away."

Edwards, a Detroit native, joined the Temptations in 1968 and was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 as a member. He sang some of the group's biggest hits, including “I Can’t Get Next To You,” “Cloud Nine” and “Ball Of Confusion.”

Flowers will be placed on Edwards' Hollywood Walk of Fame star in Los Angeles to honor his contributions to R&B.
