Swift Water Training Rescue Practice in Texas Turns Real

Emergency responders practicing swift-water rescues in a South Texas river saved a boy who fell from an inner tube earlier this month.

Special Operations Cmdr. Craig Smith was teaching the class Oct. 5 when he saw a boy slip off his inner tube in the Comal River in New Braunfels. Austin-Travis County EMS announced the rescue Monday.

According to EMS, the young swimmer went under and struggled to resurface. Smith immediately stopped teaching and made his way to the struggling boy.

Video from Smith's helmet camera shows the commander, with help from a line thrown by other rescuers, reaching the boy and getting him to safety.

The child was examined and then returned to his parents. The boy's name and age weren't immediately released.
