Scared by Bear, Sisters Get Lost in Park

State police rescued two sisters hiking in a central Pennsylvania park who say they got disoriented after seeing a bear.

The 21-year-old and 19-year-old women say they were working on a college project Saturday at Colonel Denning State Park in Newville.

Trooper Eric Keebaugh told PennLive.com that the hikers reported getting unnerved and disoriented after seeing a bear. He also says it got dark more quickly than the women had expected.

“I think nightfall came upon them a lot quicker than what they had possibly anticipated, and they didn't really know where they were,” Keebaugh told the paper.

The sisters called for help around 4:30 p.m. and were able to guide rescuers using a picture they had taken earlier in the day. They were located around 7 p.m. about 2 miles away from the park’s headquarters.

Authorities did not release the sisters' names.
