Rio Olympics by the Numbers Day 16: 1 US Boxing Gold; Epic Volleyball Comeback and More

Take a look at some notable numbers from the final day of the 2016 Rio Olympics

First gold for U.S. boxers in Rio, first medal for the U.S. in marathon since 2004 and an epic volleyball comeback.

Take a look at some notable numbers from the final day of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

1: The amount of gold medals won by U.S. boxers in Rio. Claressa Shields defeated the Netherlands’ Nouchka Fontijn, becoming the first American boxer of either gender to win two Olympic boxing gold medals. Her first gold was at the 2012 London Games.

1 minute, 21 seconds: That is all that separated American Galen Rupp from an Olympic gold medal. He will have to settle for bronze, as he finished third behind gold-medal winner Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya (2:08:44) and silver-medalist Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia (2:09:54). It was Rupp's second marathon and first ever in the Olympics. Rupp became the first American to medal in this event since Keflezighi won silver in 2004.

2-0: The United States men’s volleyball team trailed Russia two sets to none in the bronze medal game. But the American won the third and fourth sets to force a winner-take-all fifth, which went to the U.S., 15-13, and with it, the bronze medal.

4th: The Spanish men’s Olympic basketball team won its fourth Olympic medal by defeating Australia, 89-88, in the bronze medal game. The bronze is Spain’s first in Olympic competition. Spain had won silver in the 1984, 2008 and 2012 games.

Four more: In his fourth Olympics, Carmelo Anthony tied Russian Gennadi Volnov and Sergei Belov for the most individual medals won by a men’s basketball player in Olympic history with four each.

With Team USA’s gold medal, Anthony has three golds—the most among men’s basketball players ever; American women Teresa Edwards, Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings and Diana Taurasi have the most gold medals won by basketball players with four each—and a bronze. He was a member of the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 U.S. Olympic teams.

Volnov won a gold, two silvers and a bronze between 1960 and 1972, while Belov earned a gold and three bronze medals in the four games spanning 1968 and 1980.

10: The number of countries which won their first Olympic gold medals in the Rio games. According to the Associated Press, the 10 golds are the most won by first-time Olympic participating countries since 1996, when 16 nations won their first Olympic gold medals.

15: The number of U.S. Men’s basketball teams who completed Olympic play with sustaining a loss. Only three U.S. teams lost in Olympic play: The 1972 team, which believes it was cheated by officials in the gold medal game loss to the former Soviet Union; the 1988 team, which dropped a 82-76 decision to the Soviet Union in the semifinals before rebounding to rout Australia, 78-49, in the Bronze medal game; and the 2004 team, which lost three times in the tournament on its way to winning the bronze medal. That team, which included Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, Stephon Marbury and Allen Iverson, among other NBA starts, fell to Puerto Rico (92-73) and Lithuania (94-90) in the preliminary round, and dropped an 89-81decision to Argentina in the semifinals.

121: The total number of medals won by the United States in the Rio Olympics.
