A pregnant woman was shot in the abdomen after three strangers tried to enter her home in a southern Chicago suburb Wednesday, police said.
The woman was in a home around 6 p.m. in the 22400 block of Strassburg in Sauk Village when three men knocked on the door to her house. A man inside the home answered the door and the suspects asked for someone the homeowner didn’t know, according to Chief Robert Kowalski.
When the homeowner became suspicious and started closing the door, one of the suspects opened fire, Kowalski said. The bullet went through a wall in the home and hit the pregnant woman in the abdomen close to her side.
The woman, who police say was in her 30s, was taken to an area hospital but was later transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County because of her pregnancy. Her condition was not immediately known.
Police said the homeowners did not know the suspects and it was not clear what the motive was in the shooting.
Residents say the news has stunned the normally quiet community.
“The fact that the lady was pregnant, I don’t know why people would want to do that,” said Miranda Vittorelli.

Kowalski said nearby towns were alert about the shooting and authorities are advising residents not to answer their door if they don’t know the person knocking.
“We’re going to solve this one way or another,” he said.
