Virginia Police Announce $100K Reward in 2009 Slaying Case
    Montgomery County (Va.) Sheriff's Office

Virginia State Police say a $100,000 reward is being offered for information that can lead to solving the decade-old killings of two Virginia Tech students.

A group of 10 agencies led by Virginia State Police will be re-examining evidence from the 2009 deaths of sophomores Heidi Lynn Childs and David Lee Metzler, authorities announced last week.

The young couple was found dead in August 2009 in the parking lot of Caldwell Fields, a recreation area popular with students in Montgomery County, Virginia. The two had been shot.

Police hope the reward and a new website will generate renewed interest and additional information, they said in a Friday release. The agency is pursuing specific individuals and hopes scientific and technological advancements could turn up new leads, State Bureau of Criminal Investigation official Lt. Colonel Tim Lyon.

Childs and Metzler met through their church youth group, according to the police agency's website. On the night of Aug. 26, 2009, the two headed to Caldwell Fields.

"David had brought his guitar to play for them by the fire. They weren't even planning on staying out that late," the website said. "They never made it out of the car, before they were brutally attacked."

Their bodies were found early the next morning.
