A California mother accused of stabbing her three young children to death in May pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Monday.

Carol Ann Coronado, 30, was indicted by a criminal Grand Jury on three counts of capital murder and one count of attempted murder in the deaths of her three daughters and an alleged attack on her mother, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

The indictment includes a special circumstances of multiple murders and using a knife in the commission of a crime, which means Coronado could be eligible for the death penalty.

Coronado’s mother found her in the family’s home near Carson after having a troubling conversation earlier in the day. Sophia, 2, Yazmine, 16 months, and Xenia, 2 months, had been stabbed to death.

Rudy Coronado, Carol Coronado’s husband, called 911 when her mother ran out of the house screaming and he discovered what had happened while he was working on a car in front of the house.

Carol Coronado was initially hospitalized with self-inflicted stab wounds before she was transferred to a jail ward.

Coronado’s attorney has argued his client suffered from postpartum depression.

She is due back in court Oct. 17.
