Mother Says Toddler Likely Ingested Methadone

The mother of a 20-month-old girl who died told investigators her daughter likely ingested methadone, according to a report by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner.

The toddler was found unresponsive after a nap at her Milwaukee home last Friday. The medical examiner's office says the cause of the child's death has not been determined pending toxicology test results.

The ME report says the mother initially thought her daughter had choked on some milk. It says she called investigators the following day after learning from her 8-year-old son that the girl drank from a water bottle that contained methadone while the two siblings waited in a van.

The mother told authorities she left the toddler in the van with her older brother while she took another child to a doctor's appointment.
