Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell told The Eagle newspaper that Amjad Sultan owned the plane and was working to earn his pilot's license.

The Cirrus SR-20 crashed Sunday morning near the airport in Navasota, northwest of Houston. Also killed were instructor Russell Reina and the children of Sultan's girlfriend, a 7-year-old boy and his older sister.

The pilot of another plane spotted the wreckage of the Cirrus in a wooded area.

It was not clear whether Sultan or Reina was flying the plane at the time, and the cause was not immediately known.
