Lululemon's Founder Blames Sheer Yoga Pants Problems on Women's Bodies

The founder of Lululemon thinks he has cracked the code on the problem with their too-sheer yoga pants: user error.

Chip Wilson said in a Bloomberg TV interview on Tuesday that their yoga pants are not made for everyone. The Canadian retailer recalled their $98 Luon pants in March because of complaints that the material was too see-through.

"Frankly some women's bodies just don't actually work for it," Wilson said on Bloomberg TV's "Street Smart" show. "It's really about the rubbing through the thighs, how much pressure is there over a period of time, how much they use it."

Wilson's wife and co-founder Shannon interrupted with what might arguably be a more tactful explanation.

"It's about the use and what it's up against. Are you sitting on a cement ground?" Shannon said.

When host Trish Regan asked "Interesting, not every woman can wear a Lululemon yoga pant?" Chip backtracked.

"No, I think they can," Wilson said. "I just think it's how you use it."

Lululemon has been slammed in the past for shunning plus size women by restocking large sizes less frequently than the smaller ones.

Wilson also talked about other variables that go into making a high-tech product to explain what he admitted was a "mistake" in their production.

“There’s one thousand things that could go wrong on a technical fabric, and when three of those things go wrong at any one time, something’s going to happen,” Wilson said. “It’s almost impossible to build a quality-control case for each one of those combinations.”
