Lubbock Boy, 5, Dies After Shot By Rifle Handled By Father

The father's rifle sent a single round through a wall and into the family room

Texas police say a 5-year-old boy has died after being shot when a rifle handled by his father accidentally discharged at the family's Lubbock house.

Police Lt. Ray Mendoza said Thursday that the victim's name has yet to be released as the investigation continues.

Mendoza says the boy's father was cleaning or doing maintenance on the rifle Tuesday night when it accidentally fired.

Mendoza says a single round went through a wall and into the family room, where the victim was standing. The boy was shot in the chest and died later at a Lubbock hospital.

Mendoza says the victim's 3-year-old brother was also in the house. Nobody else was hurt.

No charges were immediately filed.
