Man Dies After Cutting Himself on Glass While Entering Michigan Home Under Renovation

Police believe Lavonte Moses was alone and caused his own death

A man was found dead by a renovation crew at a vacant Michigan home after cutting himself on glass while entering the house, police said.

The Muskegon Police Department said on Feb. 15, officers were responding to a report of a man found dead inside of the home under renovation in the 400 block of Catherine Ave. When they arrived, they identified the man as Lavonte Moses, 22, who was reported missing on Feb. 13, after not being heard from for nearly a week.

Investigators said evidence indicated Moses had been alone prior to being reported missing and caused his own death after cutting himself critically on glass shards while climbing through a window, according to police. Additionally, the home was deadbolt locked from the inside.

Initial forensic results indicate major blood loss was a “major contributing factor” to Moses’ death, according to police.

A woman who said she was Moses’ girlfriend told MLive she filed the missing person report after not hearing from him after the night of Feb. 8.

"He texted me goodnight and that he loved me," Ashley Smedley told the publication Moses messaged her that night.

Smedley, 23, and Moses have three kids together, ages 7 months, 1 ½ , and 2, she told MLive.

"He was an energetic person," she told MLive. "He was genuinely just the sweetest person you could ever meet. He was not the type who would start anything."
