Iran Ships Uranium to Russia in Line With Nuclear Deal

More than 25,000 pounds of low-enriched uranium materials left Tehran for Russia on Monday honoring Iran’s July 14 nuclear deal with major powers, NBC News reported.

The shipment was confirmed by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who made the announcement in a statement, according to Reuters.

Tehran committed to reducing its uranium stockpiles to below 660 pounds under the deal, which would see sanctions removed if Iran accepted long-term curbs on its nuclear program.

If refined, low-enriched uranium can yield fissile material for nuclear weapons. The West has long suspected Iran’s nuclear provisions were aimed at creating a nuclear bomb.
