Baby Dies After Falling From Third-Story Window in Chula Vista

An 11-month-old baby girl died after she fell from a third-story window at a California apartment complex Monday evening.

Chula Vista police found no criminal wrongdoing and say her death was pure accident. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the baby as Aaliyah Ramirez.

The fatal fall happened around 6:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Santa Cora.

According to police, both parents were home when the accident occurred. The father was playing with his daughter on a bed underneath the window. Police said the father got distracted when tragedy struck.

Neighbors heard the father screaming and called police.

“He was screaming really loud. Never in my life have I heard that kind of screaming,” said witness Martha Camacho.

“I’m going to have this on my mind for a long time,” she said.

The little girl was flown to Rady Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

As the days get hotter and more people are leaving their windows open, medical professionals are using the incident as a warning for parents. In this case, the window was open, and the baby fell through the screen.

“Realize this can happen to you,” said Renee Douglas, an R.N. at Rady Children’s Hospital. “It can happen anywhere. It could be when you’re on vacation at grandma’s house. It could be you’re moving into a new apartment, or you’re at a friend’s house that’s a second-story building.”

We’re told the parents are a young military couple.
