A new report by the Southern Poverty Law Center shows Texas tops the list of states with a growing number of hate groups.
According to the report, the top five states for hate groups in 2015 were Texas, California, Florida, Tennessee and Pennsylvania.
Citing shootings like the one that left nine dead in a historically black Charleston, South Carolina, church, the report said "2015 was a year marked by extraordinary violence from domestic extremists — a year of living dangerously."
It found a 42 percent increase in the total number of anti-Muslim hate groups in 2015. During that same period, the U.S. saw a total increase of 14 percent in the number of hate groups nationwide.
The Ku Klux Klan have has been the biggest portion of hate groups counted by the Center, but the report found that there were as many general hate groups in 2015. Also gaining ground were black separatist groups, which "demonized" Jews and white and gay people besides calling for police reform, made up 20 percent of hate groups, according to the group.
The report includes and interactive "Hate Map" where you can see where the groups are based.
